Camping With a Dutch Oven

Camping is a great way to spend time with the family away from the hustle and bustle of life. While there are different views of camping, from the luxurious RV campers to those that prefer to "rough it" with just the bare essentials, one thing is always prominent on a camper's list and that is food. Great food makes for a wonderful camping trip and one of the easiest ways to cook while camping is to use a cast iron Dutch oven. When you cook in an iron Dutch oven, everything is prepared in that one pot. Throw in any combination of meat, vegetables and seasonings and the results will always be delicious.

Some may think you have resorted to Pilgrim times when they see a cast iron Dutch oven perched above your campfire, but the delicious smells will push those thoughts out of their head. Instead they will want to taste your meal that is being cooked in an iron Dutch oven. As your meal cooks slowly over the flames, you can stir it to make sure everything is cooking evenly. Once done, simply spoon out the food into individual serving dishes. Any leftovers can be stored in the covered pot for reheating at the next meal.

As an alternative to cooking in an iron Dutch oven over a fire, some cast iron Dutch ovens come with a cover that has a lip around the edge. This is so that burning coals can be placed on top. This will cook the food inside the pot from the top to the bottom. It works well for reheating, or for food that doesn't need to be cooked for a long time, or with high heat. When you prepare camp food with a Dutch oven you don't need to bring any other pots or pans. You can cook anything in an iron Dutch oven, from eggs to beans and even beef stew. Hearty meals can be hard to come by while camping, but not when you cook with a cast iron Dutch oven.

Another great dish to cook in a cast iron Dutch oven while camping is a casserole. Simply put your favorite casserole ingredients into layers in the iron Dutch oven and place over the campfire to cook. A Dutch oven heats up evenly and does not waste heat. Don't forget that iron Dutch ovens have covers that can be flipped over and used as a skillet, perfect for making pancakes, fried eggs, or anything else that calls for a flat cooking surface.
