Cast Iron Roasters, Iron Roasters – It May Be Old Fashioned, but the Taste Is Great
Cooking in cast iron roasters may be considered an old fashioned method of cooking to some, but the taste is undeniably great. Nothing compares to the full-body flavor that is achieved when cooking in cast iron. Cast iron cookware tends to be more expensive, but you get what you pay for and when taken care of, cast iron pots and pans will last for decades. This is probably why many people think cooking with cast iron is old fashioned and it reminds them of their grandmother's cooking. She probably received it as a wedding gift and was still using the same pans 50 years later.
When shopping for cast iron roasters, you will notice that some come with an enamel coating. While these types of iron roasters sport dazzling colors, prevent rusting, don't need to be seasoned and are easy to clean, they lack in other areas. Enamel coated cast iron roasters limits the leaching of iron into the food, cannot withstand searing hot heat, food tends to stick to it more easily, and the enamel can chip. If the enamel chips, it not only affects the appearance, but rust can set in if that chipped area isn't seasoned.
Before you purchase cast iron roasters, look to see if they are seasoned or not. If they aren't, you'll have to season them prior to cooking it them. You'll do this by rubbing in vegetable or olive oil on the inside of the iron roasters and covers. Place in a 300 degree oven for about an hour. Let cool. Repeat the process about three or four times. Then it is ready for cooking in. If your iron roasters are seasoned, you can cook in them immediately. But to keep the cast iron from rusting, you will have to re-season the iron several times a year. When storing your cast iron roasters or other cast iron pots and pan, place a paper towel inside each one to absorb moisture and prevent rusting.
A cast iron roaster pot can be used for a variety of things. It can be used to cook stew, casseroles, chicken, beef, pork, or any other type of meat and vegetables. It can also be used to marinate, freeze and refrigerate food. Take the iron roaster camping for cooking on a campfire or grill. Find an iron roaster that comes with a top that can be turned upside-down and used as a griddle. These pots are very versatile, making it well worth the money to purchase one.
