Tips To Care for Your Cast Iron Skillet


People have been cooking with cast iron for centuries. It heats food evenly and uses less energy that other metal cookware. It also does not absorb tastes and odors from the different foods that are cooked on it. Add to these characteristics the fact that a good piece of cast iron cookware that is taken care of can last decades and you will know why cast iron skillets are the best types of pans to cook with. The key to long lasting iron skillets is that they are cared for and treated well.


When you first purchase cast iron skillets, they may need to be seasoned. This means that the metal is not yet prepared to be cooked with and the surface will be very sticky. In order to season iron skillets, first scrub with a stiff brush, soap and hot water. Rinse with hot water to make sure all soap is gone. Next, coat the skillet with a thin layer of olive oil or vegetable oil. Wipe any puddles of oil with a paper towel and place in the oven, set to 350 degrees. After an hour, take the skillet out of the oven and let cool. Repeat this process three or four times. The skillet is now ready to use. Some iron skillets will come seasoned and will not need to be prepared prior to cooking.


Cast iron can rust easily when there is a lot of moisture, so baking oil into the surface and into the miniscule crevices of the iron skillets will keep the rust away. If you will not be using your cast iron skillets for a month or more, store with a paper towel on top to absorb moisture.


The more you cook with your cast iron skillets, the better the food will taste as the seasoning will build up on the skillet over the years. After using iron skillets, it's important to clean them immediately so that food won't dry on the pans. If food does dry on the cast iron skillets, scrap it off with a knife prior to cleaning. Then clean the skillet with hot water and a stiff brush. Make sure to rinse all the soap off and then dry completely. Treat it with oil and heat for about 15 minutes in the oven set at 300 degrees. After 15 minutes, turn the oven off and let the skillet sit in there until it returns to room temperature. You can then begin to cook with the skillet again.
